Visiting a Quaker meeting for the first time can feel different from other religious services. Here's what you can anticipate:
Arrival: Feel free to arrive a few minutes early. Someone will greet you and help you find a seat. Meetings typically last about an hour.
The Silence: We sit together in silence, creating a space for personal reflection and spiritual connection. This isn't an awkward silence but a shared practice of waiting on the Spirit.
Vocal Ministry: Sometimes someone may feel moved to speak, share a prayer, or offer a thought. This comes from spiritual leading, not preparation. After they speak, the silence resumes.
The Close: The meeting ends when an elder shakes hands with their neighbor, and this greeting passes around the room.
Silent worship is at the heart of Quaker practice. Here's how to engage with this spiritual discipline.
As you sit, allow your thoughts to settle. Some find it helpful to focus on their breathing or a meaningful word or phrase.
Open yourself to the "still, small voice" within. This may come as a feeling, an insight, or simply a sense of peace.
There is no right or wrong way to experience worship. Simply be present and open to whatever arises in the silence.
If you feel strongly moved to share something, stand and speak briefly. If you're new, you may prefer to simply listen.
Following worship, we gather for fellowship — a time of refreshments and conversation. This is a wonderful opportunity to meet other Friends, ask questions, and learn more about our community.
Many first-time visitors find this the perfect chance to share their experience of the meeting and connect with members who can offer guidance and welcome.
Occasionally, after fellowship, there may be opportunities for discussion groups, adult education sessions, or business meetings that visitors are welcome to observe.
